General InformationThe Long Island Soaring Association operates from Brookhaven Calabro Municipal Airport (HWV), which is located near the intersection of William Floyd Parkway (C.R. 83) and Sunrise Highway (S.R. 27) in Shirley, Long Island, NY. The club operates every Saturday and Sunday, year round, weather permitting. Flight and ground instruction are available for club members and prospective members. Due to Federal Regulations, we do not give sightseeing rides to paying passengers. Newcomers to the flying field should come early and go to the Airport Terminal Building. This location is marked on this local road map. Tell them you are here for the gliding club. They will call us and we will send a car to take you out to the glider flight line. There you can see our club in action, meet some of the members. If you wish you can take an introductory flight. Please do not walk around on the airport grounds without permission, as there are many taxing aircraft on the premises. General Membership Meetings are held the third Wednesday of every month at 8:00 p.m. The meetings are held in the Conference Room on the second floor of the Main Terminal Building at Republic Airport (FRG), Route 110, Farmingdale, New York. Guests are always welcome. Prospective members must attend at least two meetings, and take three glider flights, before becoming eligible for membership. There is a one time (refundable) membership equity fee of $600. Monthly dues are $33 to cover hangar and tie-down rent. There is no charge for glider rental or instruction. Tow fees are set to recover the cost of fuel and maintenance, and are very reasonable. Members are expected to invest sweat equity to keep the flying costs low. For more information, contact a club member.
